Economics of Snail Production among Small-Holder Farmers in South-East Nigeria

Kaine, A. I. N. and Ume, S. I.

ABSTRACT
Economics of snail production among farmers in South East of Nigeria was studied. A total of one hundred and twenty respondents were selected through a multi-stage sampling procedure, and used for the study. Data were obtained through a well-structured questionnaire and secondary sources. Percentage responses and frequency distributions, regression analysis and gross margin analysis were employed in the data analysis and presentation. The results revealed that determinants to farmers’ output were age of the farmers and their educational level. Snail production was profitable in the study area. The major limitations to snail production were inadequate credit, slow growth of snails, inadequate information and high mortality. It is imperative to enact policies and programmes that would enhance farmers’ access to educational programmes, extension services and credit through microfinance and commercial banks.
